Course Description:
This course defines the differing forms of dementia including diagnosis, prognosis and treatment options. It addresses communication strategies and feelings as well as depression and repetitive behaviors. Strategies are given to better manage and prevent delusions, hallucinations, hoarding behaviors and wandering risks. Aggressive behaviors, catastrophic reactions, Intimacy, and sexuality are discussed. Personal Care includes Pain management and identifying pain in this population with nontraditional ways of showing pain, nutrition, bathing, dressing, toileting, falls, and sleep disturbances. Activities must be offered in non-traditional ways using person-centered strategies. Environmental setup is imperative to success. Information is provided for Abuse and neglect prevention as well as staff and family support. Requirements for Diversity and cultural competence are stressed as well as Spiritual and end of life issues. All while bringing to light the absolute obligation of therapists and commitment to best functional outcomes using a person centered approach.
