Course Description:
Muscle power, the product of muscle force and the velocity of contraction, has been demonstrated to be correlated to functional mobility, even moreso than strength. Muscle power deficits profoundly impact individuals with a range of conditions commonly seen in the orthopedic and sports physical therapy setting, from elite athletes to the frail elderly. These power deficits may not always be best identified nor addressed with conventional strategies of the physical therapist. Therefore, in some cases, it may be beneficial to consider assessment and intervention strategies specific to muscle power, within a comprehensive outpatient rehabilitation program. The purpose of this presentation is to give an overview of when, why, and how to assess muscle power in a clinical setting, as well as clinical reasoning for safe implementation of power training across the spectrum of functional abilities.
