Course Description:

University of Michigan Health 2024 Stroke Symposium is a hybrid event offering the opportunity for participants to
attend in person at the Ann Arbor Marriott Ypsilanti at Eagle Crest or virtually. This symposium educates participants
on the current approach and management of uncommon ischemic stroke conditions.
Stroke course content is directly related to physical therapy because strokes often result in impairments in movement, strength, coordination, balance, and other physical functions. Physical therapists play a crucial role in the rehabilitation process for stroke survivors, helping them regain mobility, improve function, and enhance their quality of life. Here's how stroke course content can improve a participant's knowledge or skills in physical therapy:

-   Understanding Stroke Pathophysiology: Stroke courses typically cover the underlying causes and mechanisms of stroke, including ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes. This knowledge helps physical therapists understand the specific impairments and challenges faced by stroke survivors, guiding them in developing targeted rehabilitation plans.

-   Assessment and Evaluation Techniques: Participants learn various assessment tools and techniques used to evaluate stroke survivors' physical abilities, such as range of motion, muscle strength, balance, and functional mobility. Mastery of these assessment skills allows physical therapists to accurately identify deficits and track progress throughout the rehabilitation process.

-   Evidence-Based Rehabilitation Strategies: Stroke courses incorporate evidence-based rehabilitation approaches and interventions proven to be effective in improving outcomes for stroke survivors. Participants learn techniques such as therapeutic exercises, task-specific training, gait training, neuromuscular re-education, and functional training tailored to individual patient needs.

-   Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Effective stroke rehabilitation often requires collaboration among various healthcare professionals, including physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, physicians, nurses, and others. Stroke courses emphasize the importance of interdisciplinary teamwork and communication, equipping participants with the skills to collaborate effectively with other healthcare providers to optimize patient care.

Overall, stroke course content directly enhances participants' knowledge and skills in physical therapy by providing them with a comprehensive understanding of stroke rehabilitation principles, assessment techniques, evidence-based interventions, and strategies for interdisciplinary collaboration and patient education. This knowledge equips physical therapists with the necessary tools to deliver high-quality care and support to stroke survivors as they strive to regain function and independence.
